In 2015 ‘Big’ will become ‘BAU’
Big Data, which was a hot topic in most of 2014, would be on its way to become mainstream in 2015, unlike many bubbles that IT industry has seen in the past. It is very clear that ‘Big data’ has taken solid roots to be key platform for business transformation. One of the sure signs are enterprises are appointing Chief Data officers and treating data as organizational assets as seriously as they would treat the financial assets. Gartner’s report ‘by 2015, 25% of large organizations will have appointed Chief Data Officers’ says a lot about seriousness of the enterprises.
Almost all of the predictions for 2015 have listed‘maturing of Big Data’ among the top 3 things to expect. Even in the world of big investment, Business Insider in its article titled ‘Billions Of Dollars Are Set To Flow Into These 7 Areas Of Tech In 2015’lists Big Data at number 1.
Big Data is not just a technology need nor is it only a way to organize large data. Though in the initial days, lot of work happened on creating platforms to organize huge amount of data efficiently, but going forwardorganizations ‘don’t just want to store more data better, they want to innovate around that data.’
As companies realize importance of big data, it would become part of enterprise architecture and 2015 will see enterprise architects take center stage. In John Schroeder of MapR’s words “As organizations move quickly beyond experimentation to serious adoption in the data center, enterprise architects move front and center into the big data adoption path … ”
2014 has created lot of awareness of Big Data and many organizations have started putting in place large datamarts in place. But in the coming year, these and newer organizations would move much more quickly, partly because data volume is growing much faster, to unleash the value of data. Organizations now know that the value is not in data, value is in answers. Hence we would see quite a lot of activity around Advanced, pervasive and invisible analytics.
Some organizations, that have taken early leap into big data and leveraging analytics, would want to go one step further by exploring the ways this data can respond than just creating reports. This would be an interesting development where the combination of IOT, big data, cloud would create self awareness in the devices that would lead to these devices responding to stimuli.
Of course the foundation for this would be based on how well the data would be organized, how much it is being enriched and how well it is contextualized. And for this reason role of Chief Data Officer would become crucial. That is why Norwest Venture Partners’ Matt Howard says “The hottest job in corporate America will be the chief data officer”
Interesting times are ahead.
Wish you a very happy and successful 2015.
