Customer Background
The customer is the largest manufacturer of ophthalmic lenses, delivering progressive, anti-reflective, anti-fog, sun protection, adaptive lenses, lens coatings, and computer glasses. This leading French optics company worked with a massive distributor system and processed order requests through several critical business applications.
The customer wanted a single window for technical support, but due to an NDA issue, they were unable to do so.
Business Challenges
The customer seeked a reliable DX partner with relevant industry knowledge on open source database technologies, who could also provide extended technology support and services.
The customer was faced with the predicament of choosing between enterprise or community PostgreSQL version. Even though the enterprise version offers higher support and tools, the customer was keen to go with the community version – and needed a consulting services provider to guide and support on the same.
The customer also wanted to move to the Azure Cloud and needed the right guidance on making the migration happen. Several of its business critical applications were running on the existing framework and the customer was hesitant to make big changes, as they wanted their data to remain consistent.
The Solution

The customer had a total of 30 application databases on PostgreSQL which were segregated into two setups. The first setup had a primary database server and for HA two standby servers with read-only access. To achieve zero data loss, Ashnik’s tech team configured asynchronous replication between the primary database and the first standby database. Similarly, there was an asynchronous replication done between the Primary database and the secondary database.
The second setup was used in reporting the setup as it could be used in successfully running a reporting setup. To accommodate the application requests, the customer was using pgbouncer as a connection pooler, and the entire setup was running on Microsoft Azure Cloud.
